I was stationed at Kagnew from July 1968 - July 1970. I was an MP and spent most of my time working at the PMO office in vehicle registration. Captain Smith was the PMO at this time. Lots of good times and good friends. Also spent time in Korea and Okinawa with ASA. Finished my regular Army time at USASATCS at Ft. Devens. Spent 14 years with the Texas Army National Guard and retired as CSM/E9.

I lived on Kagnew Station circa 1970 to 1972 as a dependent with my family. My father was Pete Gaustad. I was 8/9 years old, so I experienced life through a child's eyes. It was still quite memorable. I stumbled on this excellent site after someone asked me about a photo I have in my office of my dad with Haile Selassi.

Was at Kagnew from JUL 65 thru my ETS JUN 68. Was a 283/26K at Stonehouse. Loved Kagnew, the work, the team, the locals, the food, the weather... what was there not to like? I had my own ham radio station set up at one of the big towers at SH. My U.S. call was K4FMA (now W4WJ) my Ethiopian call was ET3FMA. Looking for Carl Cooper.

Wow ....... stumbled on this website while searching for impacts Fidel Castro had on Ethiopia and Eritrea's Independence. I was assigned to Kagnew Station from July '67 - Jan '70. Perhaps the best kept secret assignment ASA offered. My son Jeffrey was delivered at the Stations hospital but too young to remember this fantastic place. this tour was my favorite assignment in the 9 years served in ASA, setting the stage for a total of 46 years in the business.
Thanks for all the memories share here!

I was stationed at Kagnew from April 1959 through June 1962. I worked in tract B as a tape ape and other duties. I was a fair bowler and a so so golfer. To answer one of the questions I saw, the greens were sand and the fairways were very lush during rainy season but hard pan and stones the rest of the year. Would enjoy hearing from anyone from that era. John

I WAS STATIONED AT KAGNEW FROM 1966 TO JULY 1967. I WAS WITH THE NAVY AT WORKED AT TRACK F. THE ROCK GROUP (MAUROCKS) FORMED WHEN I WAS THERE AND I REMEMBER WHEN THE SHIRTS AND WIGS ARRIVED AND THE BANDS FIRST GIG AT THE OASIS CLUB. IT WAS A VERY GOOD PLACE TO BE STATIONED AT THAT TIME AND THE 2-2-2&80 OFF SHIFTS WERE GREAT. WE WOULD RENT JEEPS FROM SPECIAL SERVICES AT THE MOTOR POOL FOR $2.00 A DAY AND MAKE TRIPS TO MASSAWA FOR OUR 80 HOUR OFF BREAKS. WE ALWAYS HAD A GREAT TIME AT THE BEACH AND IN TOWN. I HAD THE JOB OF GOING FROM TRACK F BACK TO THE BASE AT 2:00AM IN THE MORNING FOR MID RATIONS AND ALWAYS STOPPED AT THE BACK GATE TO SEE IF THE GUARD (LOCAL) HAD A EMPTY MILK BOTTLE AND I WOULD GET HIM A FULL ONE FROM THE MESS HALL. EMPTY BOTTLES WERE EXCHANGED FOR FULL ONES...NO BOTTLE, NO MILK! THE GUARD WAS ALWAYS HAPPY TO SEE ME. JUST CALL IT PUBLIC RELATIONS, AND LEAVE IT AT THAT. ALL IN ALL I HAD A GOOD TIME WHILE I WAS STATIONED THERE!!!!!!

I was ASA assigned to Asmara/Massawa from 1964-65 as the pool lifeguard (Kagnew), and then the recreational boat dock manager attached to the TTU Massawa. In Massawa, two local employees (Mike Bizamlak and Abdul Ali) provided more than valuable assistance to me. The two P's (Ramon Guiterez and the other I can't remember the name of) also attached to the TTU were great friends as were all at the TTU. I fondly remember visits from buddies of the Kagnew motor pool while down to convoy supplies. Waiting for the ship to off-load, we passed time at the Savoy Hotel Bar, the Four Floors rooftop bar, and the Crocidero bar. Plenty of cold beer helped ease the high temps. Oh, anyone remember R&R on North Beach and jeep runs into town to bring babes out to party with? Great Times! I still miss those days partying with some really great guys.

I was stationed at Kagnew Station from Feb. 62 to July 64. I was in the ASA. After graduating from NC State, I enlisted (to avoid the draft). I got married a week before I was sent to Asmara, and didn't see my wife until I got back. While there I met Haile Selassie, when Ethiopia formally annexed Eritrea. Lots of great stories about Eritrea and Ethiopia.

My father, Don C. Burcky, was stationed at Kagnew from 1959 - 1962 and was a Sergeant in the Army. I came across this site while at work and let him know about it. If there is anyone associated with this site, please let me know.

Thank you.

Hello, My name is Stan and I am currently trying to make a shadow box with medals patches and ribbons for a close friend of mine Don Culbertson. who was stationed at Kagnew from around 55 to around 58. I was curious if you could provide me with any info or pics of unit patches and insignia to help me make his Christmas present. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated Don is a great man and im lucky to know him. He played guitar a lot and on the stage on base I think. I would love any info on unit patches and insignia so I can get everything right.

Ok, we are almost there. After landing we were invited to dinner by one of our guys who had a relative working on the Arabian American Co (ARAMCO). I think we drank all his beer that night. Next day we hopped aboard our plane for Asmara. I remember the announcement that we would have to gain altitude in order to get into the airport at Asmara. So there you have it a trip by air that took well over a week, all because the Army was in a hurry to get us to our destination. Some of my barracks mates were: Ron Gardner, Leon Peebles, a Cpl Jerry Something, a guy named Johnny who played the guitar. After I left Asmara, I was transferred to Munich, where I decided to become a "lifer." I did 24 yrs, and retired in 1972 as a CW2. Oh, I got my TS clearance back about six months after leaving. I'm open to Emails from any who were there with me.

Me again. Seems like there might have been an epidemic of problems with C-54's in those days, because this plane also blew an oil line and we landed at Nicosia, Cyprus. We were there four several days and after awhile we ran out of things to sell in town and were huddled under blankets on the plane when the General's Aide found us. The General footed the bill for a stay at a hotel in town on the condition that we send him a money order for our share when we arrived in Asmara. Soon we were on our way again, this time we were planned to refuel in Cairo. On arrival, we were marched off the plane into the terminal, where we were put into a glass walled room and guarded by Egyptian soldiers carrying AK-47's at port arms. From there we flew into Dhahran AFB, Saudi Arabia. See ya in the next installment.

Second Installment: Most of our Cryptography Class was assigned to Kagnew Station, or simply Asmara in those days. The Army wanted us in Asmara quickly, so they sent us by air instead of ship. We left Westover AFB, Mass, on a C-54 Cargo (prop) plane for our first stop in the Azore Islands. Shortly before arrival our plane blew an oil line. We were told we might have to wait four to five days for onward travel. The next morning we were told that an Air Force General was offering to move us on to Tripoli, but once we were in the air the pilot announced that we were diverting to an AFB in Morocco. We were there only a few hours and off we went again, this time bound for Cairo.
See you in the next installment.

Greetings from out of the past. I was stationed at the "old" compound next door to the U S Consulate from Dec53 to June54. Lost my TS and was trans to Munich, Ger.(Some punishment) I worked at the ASA Receiver site (Crypto). My best "bud" were Leon Peebles and Ron Gardner. I remember how hard it was to breathe when we first arrived. We lived in metal barracks across from the Mess Hall, but between there was a really tall antenna tower that had a 3-4 foot depression around it that would fill up quickly during the monsoon rains. After a night in the bars, we would race the small horse drawn buggies back to the post gate. Highly frowned on by the "brass." I have a story to tell of how we traveled to Kagnew, but not enough space, so I'll out in another post or two. SeeYa!
